Barbrook 1 & 2

With the weather improving and the ground drying up it's time for a bit of stone bothering again.

We decided to visit the two southerly Barbrook circles (there are 3, we'll leave the 3rd for another day) on Big Moor. The first circle, 1, was an easy find being very close to the main track across the moor.

Close by is a well restored kerbed cairn;

We returned to the main track, a mistake as it happened as there is a track from the cairn to Barbrook 2, but it was a mistake worth making as we could make a slight diversion to a stream, Polo needed a drink and a cool down. Back on the track there's an inscribed bench;

A short traipse across the moorland, and we found our second circle;

This one is different, with its standing stones (some missing) set into a stone embankment. It's a wonderful place to be, we sat awhile and drank tea and ate hot cross buns, skylarks singing overhead. The only downside is the proximity of the main road and the noise that goes with it, but it does make both circles easily accessible.

There are cairns littered all over the area, possibly clearance cairns, which make the wider landscape just that little bit more interesting.

A good mornings bother.

Paul.
